Descriptions of 2018 Volunteer Positions:

Pre-Event Volunteering

Skills: Communication, Organization, Strength 

Packet Stuffing & Merchandise Setup: @Ala Wai Golf Course ClubhouseThursday, April 26, – 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM
Stuffing the rider packets (numbers, route information, goodies …) and setting up the merchandise booth at Ala Wai Golf Course Clubhouse

Rider Packet Pickup: @Ala Wai Golf Course Clubhouse – Friday, April 27 – 11:30 AM to 6:15 PM, and Saturday, April 28 7:45 AM to 2:30 PM
Riders can pick-up their packets on Friday (12 PM to 6 PM) and Saturday (8 AM – 2 PM) at Ala Wai Golf Course Clubhouse. The two days are made up of four shifts in which we will happily guide the riders through this process and make sure they get the right rider packet, number, and shirt.

Pre-Ride Merchandise Sales: @Ala Wai Golf Course Clubhouse – Friday, April 27 – 11:30 AM to 6:15 PM, and Saturday, April 28 7:45 AM to 2:30 PM
Next to the packet pickup at Ala Wai Golf Course Clubhouse on Friday (12 PM to 6 PM) and Saturday (8 AM – 2 PM), riders and fans get the chance to buy great merchandise like cool shirts, jerseys, and other exclusive HBL/ride gear. We will help finding them the right shirt sizes, answer questions, and receive the payments. Divided into 4 shifts as well.

Sign Truck Loading: @GP RoadwaysSaturday, April 28 – 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
At GP Roadways in Mapunapuna area (660 Mapunapuna St.) we’ll load up the A-frame signs into the sign truck.

Aid Station Truck Loading: @Hawaii Bicycling League OfficeSaturday, April 28 – 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
At the HBL Office we will load the equipment for the aid stations onto the supply trucks to get ready for the event.

 

Event Day Setup/Support

Sign Truck – Signage Drop Off: Along Route – Sunday, April 29, 5:00 AM to 7:00 AM
You’ll help the volunteer Ride Director drop off signs that tell riders where to ride along the Hale‘iwa Metric Century route.

Aid Station Delivery Truck : Along Route – Sunday, April 29, 5:30 AM to 10:00 AM
Ride in the Aid Station Truck and help deliver supplies to the various aid stations along the North Shore.

Course Marshals: Along Route – Sunday, April 29 – 7:00 AM – 2:00 PM
We get a magnetic sign for our vehicles so everybody knows we are Course Marshals. Along the course we are the eyes of the Command Center and make sure the event is as safe as possible. We care for riders who need help or assistance. Equipped with basic tools we repair minor mechanicals or flats.

Radio Command & Assistance: @Kaiaka Bay Beach ParkSunday, April 29 – 7:00 AM – 2:00 PM
The command center makes sure the event is safe for everyone and rolls out as planned. Here, all lines come together and in case of an emergency or a hazard the proper measurements will be taken. We support the course marshals, who are working hard to make the ride a pleasurable experience for all participants. We may also do random tasks to ensure the ride goes smoothly.

Ride & Volunteer Info Tent: @Kaiaka Bay Beach Park – Sunday, April 29 – 5:00 AM – 9:30 AM & 9:00 AM – 2:00PM
The Info Tent will follow a master map and help direct lost riders and volunteers to where they need/want to go. This is divided into two shifts.

Ride Start Setup: @Kaiaka Bay Beach Park – Sunday, April 29, 5:00 AM to 8:00 AM
We will prepare the start area so everything is in place when the riders arrive and there are no complications at the start. Includes setting up the archway, guiding people to the parking lot, setting up tents, etc.

Day-Of Late Registration & Packet Pickup: @Kaiaka Bay Beach ParkSunday, April 29, 5:30 AM – 7:00 AM
Before the ride starts, we provide a station where riders can pick up their packets or even register for the ride if they didn’t have the chance to do it the other days.

Merchandise Sales: @Kaiaka Bay Beach ParkSunday, April 29 – 9:00am to 2:00pm
At the merchandise tent, we help people to find the right HBL merchandise for them (or for a gift)!

*Rider Transport: Along Route – Sunday, April 29 – 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Required for this job: Personal vehicle (truck, van, car with bike racks, etc.) that can carry at least two riders & their bikes.We get a magnetic sign for our vehicles so everybody knows we are official Ride Helpers. Under leadership from Course Marshals and the Command Center, our job is to pick-up riders and their bikes who need assistance on the HMC route or need to be brought to an aid station or back to Kaiaka Bay Beach Park. Rider Transport volunteers will be given a gas stipend.

 

Aid Stations Volunteers

Skills: Aloha, Organization, Communication, Bike Mechanics (optional), First Aid (optional)

Kaiaka Bay Beach Park Aid Station: @Kaiaka Bay Beach ParkSunday, April 29 – 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM
We provide help (drinks, snacks, medical and mechanical support) for the returning riders at Kaiaka Bay Beach Park and make sure everybody is comfortable and safe.

Waialua High School Aid Station: @Waialua High School – Sunday, April 29 – 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM
We provide help (drinks, snacks, medical and mechanical support) for the riders at Waialua High School. Both the Haleiwa Metric and Haleiwa Aloha Fun riders will be coming by this aid station.

YMCA Camp Erdman Aid Station: @YMCA Camp Erdman – Sunday, April 29 – 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM
We provide help (drinks, snacks, medical and mechanical support) for the riders at Camp Erdman and make sure everybody is comfortable and safe.

Sunset Beach Park Aid Station: @Sunset Beach Neighborhood Park – Sunday, April 29 – 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM
We provide help (drinks, snacks, medical and mechanical support) for the riders at Sunset Beach Park and make sure everybody is comfortable and safe. This is the 50KM turn around.

Kahuku Aid Station: @Kahuku High School – Sunday, April 29 – 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM
We provide help (drinks, snacks, medical and mechanical support) for the riders at Kahuku High School in Kahuku and make sure everybody is comfortable and safe. This is the 80KM turn around.

Hau‘ula Aid Station: @Hau‘ula Beach ParkSunday, April 29 – 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM
We provide help (drinks, snacks, medical and mechanical support) for the riders at the Hauula Aid Station at Hauula Beach Park and make sure everybody is comfortable and safe. This is the 100KM turn around so riders are usually extra excited to see us!

 

Medical Support

Skills: Medical Training, First Aid, Aloha

At our Aid Stations (se above) we provide medical support for all participants along the course. Therefore we need volunteers with a medical background like physicians or paramedics to guarantee high-quality first aid in emergency situations. Basic first aid kits will be provided at all aid stations, for emergencies please call 911.

 

Event Pickup

Skills: Communication, Organization, Strength 

Sign Truck Pickup: Along the Route – Sunday, April 29 – 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM
We help pick up the directional ride signage along the route and put it back on the sign truck.

Trash Truck: Along the Route – Sunday, April 29, 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM
We pickup the trash at the aid stations and bring them to the county landfill. We always want to make sure we left the ‘āina in a better place than it was before!

Aid Station Pickup Truck: Along the Route – Sunday April 29 – 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM
We pick up the remaining supplies and equipment of the already closed aid stations.

Breakdown Crew: @Kaiaka Bay Beach Park – Sunday, April 29 – 1:30 PM – 3:00 PM
What a great day it was! But our job isn’t over yet. We need to clean up the start and finish zones and remove the tents, banners, signs and equipment. The more people help the faster we’re done.

Unloading Supplies: @Hawaii Bicycling League Office – Sunday, April 29 – 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Alright, we’re almost pau! We unload the aid station trucks at the HBL office. Many hands make for fast work! Then we can go home and sleep!
