Waipahu, Oahu Bike Plan

Waipahu, Oahu Bike Plan

Google Maps Link

Overview:

Waipahu is a neighborhood located in central Oahu near Pearl Harbor. According to its neighborhood board boundaries, Waipahu is the area between Kunia Road, Ka Uka Boulevard, and Leeward Community College. The area has a mix of residences, military installations, businesses, schools, and parks. Popular destinations in the area include Waikele Shopping Center and the Kunia Golf Course. The area already has some modest bikeways. The Pearl Harbor Bike Path ends in Waipahu, there are limited bike paths in Waikele, and there are bike lanes on Anonui Street, Kupuohi Street, and Managers Drive.

What the Oahu Bike Plan calls for:

The Oahu Bike Plan suggests an ambitious mix of bike paths, routes, and lanes for the Waipahu area. Along the makai side of Waipahu, bike paths would be placed along old stream beds and cane haul roads, providing sheltered bikeways for transportation and recreation. Bike lanes along Waipahu Street and Farrington Highway would provide space for commuter cyclists to travel through Waipahu towards Ewa or Pearl City. Lanes on Awalau Street, Waikele Road, and Leole Street will connect the Pearl Harbor Bike Path and a pair of planned rail stations to greater Waipahu. And finally, a bike path extension along the shoreline will connect the Pearl Harbor Bike Path to the Leeward Bike Path, allowing cyclists to travel from Ewa to Aloha Stadium on a single protected path. The Bike Plan assigns low or medium priority to the majority of projects in Waipahu, although it designates the path extension between Pearl Harbor and the Leeward Path as high priority.
