Overview:
Waimanalo is a neighborhood located on the north-eastern side of Oahu just east of Kailua. According to its neighborhood board, Waimanalo is defined as the area between Tinker Road (just east of Enchanted Lakes) and Makapuu Point. The neighborhood is home to Bellows Air Force Station, a number of farms, and some businesses and residences. Access in and out of the area is provided exclusively by Kalanianaole Highway. Outside of a poor quality bike route along Kalanianaole Highway, the area has no bike infrastructure.
What the Oahu Bike Plan calls for:
The Oahu Bike Plan calls for a handful of modest projects to be completed in Waimanalo. The existing bike route on Kalanianaole Highway would be extended on both ends to Makapuu point and Kailua. A route would be created along the back roads of Waimanalo, giving recreational or less experienced cyclists a valid alternative to Kalanianaole Highway for their riding. Finally, a bike route would be created through Waimanalo District Park, allowing riders to cut through to the town center or sea. The Oahu Bike Plan designates the Kalanianaole projects as high priority.
Projects:
- Kalanianaole Highway (Olomana Golf Course), Olomana Golf Course to Flamingo Street, Route
- Kalanianaole Highway (Waimanalo), Wailea to Makapuu Lighthouse, Route
- Waimanalo District Park, Kamehameha Highway to Hihimanu Street, Route
- Waimanalo Loop, Kumuhau-Waikupanaha-Ahiki-Hihimanu-Poalima-Oluolu Streets, Route
