What’s there now:
School Street runs from Lusitana Street to Middle Street, marking the bottom of Kalihi Valley. The area around School Street holds a mixture of residences, schools, and businesses. The street has two lanes in each direction with parking available on much of the road. Offering connectivity to the H1 at both ends, School Street is the only through street above H1 in the area. Currently there is no bike infrastructure on School Street.
What the Oahu Bike Plan calls for:
The Oahu Bike Plan calls for a bike route to be established across the entire length of School Street. The route would consist of sharrows and create a total of 2.68 miles of new bike route. The route would form the backbone of Ewa/Diamond Head travel in the area, connecting travelers with planned and existing bike infrastructure on no less than nine roads in the area. The Oahu Bike Plan designates School Street as a high priority project and slates it for short-range implementation.
What’s being done:
The Department of Design and Construction plans to repave the road between 2015 and 2017 but has elected not to include the planned infrastructure in their design. There are no plans from other city agencies to include the planned infrastructure at this time.
