What’s there now:
Makapuu Avenue runs along the Ewa side of Kapiolani Community College from Diamond Head Road to Kilauea Avenue. Only a quarter mile or so in length, this street sees most of its traffic come from Diamond Head Theater, Leahi Hospital, and KCC. The street is wide, accommodating two large lanes of travel with sidewalks on both edges, and traffic is restricted to twenty miles per hour. Its large width and proximity to Kapiolani Community College make Makapuu Avenue an ideal candidate for bike infrastructure.
What the Oahu Bike Plan calls for:
Plans call for a bike lane to ultimately be placed along the entire length of Makapuu Avenue. In the interim, the Plan calls for a lane to be placed in the uphill direction of Makapuu and sharrows to be placed in the downhill direction. Bike infrastructure on Makapuu will ease commuting for Kapiolani Community College Students and connect to planned projects on Alohea Avenue, Kilauea Avenue, and Diamond Head Road. The Oahu Bike Plan designates Makapuu Avenue as a short-range implementation project.
What’s being done:
The Department of Transportation Services is currently planning to install the bike lane within the near future. A recent repaving of the road by the Department of Design and Construction did not include any bike infrastructure.
