What’s there now:
Keolu Drive is a loop road that circles Enchanted Lake. Keolu Drive shares its space with a park, a number of residences, a shopping center, and park. On the mauka side of Keolu runs Kalanianaole Highway. To the north-east, less than a mile away, lies the center of Kailua Town. Around the Kailua side of the loop (pictured above) Keolu Drive features two lanes of travel, bike lanes in both directions, and generous street parking. The opposite side of the loop retains the parking but sacrifices the bike lanes in favor of extra-lanes of vehicular travel.
What the Oahu Bike Plan calls for:
The Oahu Bike Plan calls for 1.46 miles of bike lanes to ultimately be added to Keolu Drive from Wanaao Road to Kalanianaole Highway. The lanes would connect to the existing lanes on Keolu Drive, meaning the entire length of the road would have a bike lane. As an interim measure, the Oahu Bike Plan suggests adding sharrows to the road. Bike infrastructure here would extend the reach of infrastructure planned for Hamakua Drive and Hahani Street and allow cyclists to safely reach Kalanianaole Highway, whose wide shoulders are popularly used by bicyclists. The Oahu Bike Plan designates Keolu Drive as a priority two project, though it earmarks the sharrows as a short-range implementation project.
What’s being done:
There are currently no plans to add more bikeways to Keolu Drive.
