What’s there now:
Kailua Road is the main road in Kailua Town, linking Kailua to Kalanianaole Highway, providing access to business in the town center, and serving as a quiet residential road on its makai end. The road is often busy, with cars, pedestrians, buses, and bikes competing for space. A variety of bike lanes are already installed on the mauka end and makai ends of the road though no infrastructure exists in the town center.
What the Oahu Bike Plan calls for:
The bike plan calls for multiple projects to be completed on Kailua Road. The section of Kailua Road from Wanaao Road to South Kalaheo Avenue is designated to receive sharrows in the short-term and a bike lane in the long-term. Kuulei Road to Hahani Street is slated to become a bike route. Hamakua Drive to Kainalu Drive is to receive a bike lane in the long-term and sharrows in the near short-term. The projects planned for Kailua Road link existing bike lanes on Kailua Road and Kainalu Drive and connect to the planned projects on Hahani, Kalaheo, and Lihiwai Roads. The Oahu Bike Plan designates all Kailua Road projects as short-range implementation projects.
What’s being done:
Bike lanes are currently not scheduled to be included in any upcoming construction plans.
