What’s there now:
Hamakua Drive connects the Enchanted Lakes neighborhood with the Kailua town center. Near the town center the road has a number of small businesses on either side of it. Further from the town center, the road is undeveloped, while as Enchanted Lakes is approached a number of residences begin to appear. The road has a total of four lanes, two in each direction, with a shoulder wide enough to accommodate a lane of parked cars. Currently there is no bike infrastructure on Hamakua Drive.
What the Oahu Bike Plan calls for:
In the long-term the Bike Plan calls for a bike lane to be installed from Hahani Street to Keolu Drive at a projected cost of $486,063. In the short-term the Bike Plan calls for sharrows to be installed. The lane on Hamakua would connect to an existing bike lane on Keolu and proposed bike infrastructure on Hahani Street. The lane would help create a route for cyclists traveling from Enchanted Lakes into the center of Kailua and improve safety on a road that has seen four crashes between 2009 and 2011 involving cyclists. The Oahu Bike Plan designates this as a short-range implementation project. The Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Bicycling also designates Hamakua as a short-range implementation project.
What’s being done:
The city’s Department of Design and Construction plans to repave the road in 2014 though they have elected not to include bike infrastructure in their construction.
