Overview:
Kapolei, Makakilo, and Honokai Hale are a trio of neighborhoods located next to Ewa that together form the Makakilo, Kapolei, Honokai Hale neighborhood board district. According to its neighborhood board, the boundaries of this district run from Kualakai Parkway on its east side to Makaiwa Beach Park (where Farrington Highway meets the sea). The area is home to a growing urban center, with a mix of residences, large businesses, and government offices sharing space. With many of its residents living in Honolulu, the area is home to snarling traffic, though the construction of the rail is hoped to alleviate this. The area already has a significant bike infrastructure, particularly in the center of Kapolei.
What the Oahu Bike Plan calls for:
The Oahu Bike Plan calls for an aggressive expansion of the existing network of bikeways in the area. The plan would add bike lanes to virtually every major road in the area. The existing Leeward Bike Path would be extended into the area, eventually allowing riders to travel from Kapolei to Aloha Stadium on a single path. Recreational paths would be created in the hills above Honokai Hale and near the sea. The plan extends to areas not yet even developed, with bike paths and lanes to be added alongside future roads. The Oahu Bike Plan describes the planned projects in this district as generally low or medium priority.
