What’s there now:
Alakawa Street is a 0.4-mile long road connecting Nimitz Highway with Dillingham Boulevard. The area around Alakawa Street is heavily commercial. Best Buy, Home Depot, and Costco occupy the street. The road is four lanes wide with vehicles regularly turning on and off the road. Currently there is no bike infrastructure on Alakawa Street.
What the Oahu Bike Plan calls for:
The Oahu Bike Plan calls for a bike lane to be placed along the entire length of Alakawa Street at an estimated cost of $47,046. The lane would connect to the existing Nimitz Highway bike lane and connect to planned bikeways on Dillingham Boulevard.
What’s being done:
The Department of Design and Construction is currently repaving Alakawa but has elected not to include the planned infrastructure in their construction. No other city agency currently has plans to install the planned infrastructure on Alakawa.
