What’s There Now:
This section of bike path runs on the sidewalk from the corner of Ala Moana Beach Park to the beginning of the Ala Wai Promenade in the Ala Moana area. The path crosses the busy Ala Moana Boulevard and Atkinson Drive intersection and is frequented by pedestrians heading between Ala Moana Beach Park, Ala Moana Shopping Center, and Waikiki. While the path does have signage designating it as part of the Lei of Parks system of bike paths, there is no hard infrastructure provided for bicycles on the path. Functionally, the path is virtually indistinguishable from a standard concrete sidewalk.
What the Oahu Bike Plan calls for:
The Oahu Bike Plan calls for the bike path along Ala Moana Boulevard to be improved at a projected cost of $14,618. Improvements here would ease travel between the existing bike paths in Ala Moana Beach Park and the Ala Wai Promenade. The bike plan calls for “minor sidewalk improvements” to be made. The Oahu Bike Plan designates the Ala Moana Boulevard path improvements as a high priority and short-range implementation project.
What’s being done:
There are currently no plans by the city to implement the bike plan on the Ala Moana Boulevard path.
