We wouldn’t be able to have great events without great volunteers! If you are able to lend an extra hand, please do! Even if you’re riding in the ride, there are volunteer opportunities before or after the event. See below for more information.
Volunteer for HMC16 – Sign Up Now!
Usually the Thursday before our event, we create the rider packets. This includes putting together the bib numbers, frame numbers, and helmet stickers, and stuffing the packets with their materials (ride guide, sponsor info, etc). HBL provides dinner as a thanks! 2016 Haleiwa Metric Century Packet Stuffing will be on April 21st at Bess Press (3565 Harding Ave) from 5:30pm to 8:30pm.
The Saturday before our event, nearly 1000 riders pick up their packets, t-shirts, and additional merchandise. This is also a time for late registration. Volunteers help direct riders to the correct packet lines, answer any questions, and help with merchandise sales & late registration. The 2016 Haleiwa Metric Century Packet Pickup is on Saturday, April 23rd at Waikiki Elementary from 8am-2pm.
Attaching our directional signs to a-frames (like no parking signs) to be placed out on the course. This takes place on Saturday at GP Roadways (660 Mapunapuna St) from 8-9am. Once you’ve finished with that, you can head over and help with aid station truck loading!
Aid Station Truck Loading
We have a storage unit at Pearl City’s Hawaii Self Storage. We fill one of the BikeEd truck full of table, tents, fruit, water jugs, etc. Many hands make for quick work! This happens on Saturday from 10am-1pm.
Kaiaka Bay Beach Park – Setup
The ride starts and finishes at Kaiaka Bay Beach Park. Setup begins at 4:30am. This includes inflating our start archway, setting up tents, directing traffic, etc.
Parking Attendant – Kaiaka Bay Beach Park
We have overflow parking on a grass section of Kaiaka Bay Beach Park. It helps to have a little bit of direction to pack the cars in just right and make sure people aren’t driving where they shouldn’t be! This shift begins at 6am and finishes before the ride starts at 7:30am.
Late Registration / Packet Pickup – Kaiaka Bay Beach Park
For those who didn’t register or weren’t able to pickup their packets on Saturday, we’re available at Kaiaka Bay Beach Park before the ride. This includes checking people off a list, handing them a packet/t-shirt, or registering them. This shift starts at 6am (or once the tent is setup!) and finishes by the 7:30am start.
Ride Command – Kaiaka Bay Beach Park
Are you someone who loves logistics? Can stay calm during chaos? Understands maps? Well command is the place for you. This is the main tent for rider communications. Working with the HPD officers, aid station captians, and course marshals, your job is to keep everyone in check and make sure any emergencies are handled and documented. There is some training prior to the event, but this shift begins at 7am and finishes at 2pm.
Merchandise – Kaiaka Bay Beach Park
Once riders begin to return from the ride (around 9am) we have a merchandise booth setup. These are HBL items that riders can purchase. We also accept Honolulu Century Ride application and HBL memberships. If you’re comfortable selling items, handling money, and answering questions, this is a great place for you! Shift begins around 9am and finishes around 2pm.
Aid Stations – Various Location
Along the course there are multiple aid stations. These serve as rest stops for the riders. There is a bathroom, food/water, mechanical support, and medical aid.
Sunset Beach Neighborhood Park – Broken into two shifts between 6:45am and 1pm.
Kahuku High School – Setup begins at 7:15am and closes at 12 noon.
Swanzy Beach Park – Setup begins at 7:30am and closes at 11am.
Kaiaka Bay Beach Park – Final Aid Station – Opens at 9am and closes at 2pm.
Clean-up – Kaiaka Bay Beach Park
Most riders have completed by 2pm. Cleanup of the park begins around then. Packing up tents, cleaning up any trash, etc.
Rubbish Truck / Aid Station Clean-up
As the aid stations close, from Swanzy to Kaiaka, we cleanup any rubbish and bring additional food to Kaiaka Bay Beach Park for the finishing riders. Ideally a person can provide their own pick-up truck, but we can rent one if needed.
Aid Station Supply Unloading – Pearl City Self Storage
After everything has been packed up at the Aid Stations and Kaiaka Bay Beach Park, we unload them back at the storage unit. If it has been wet, this might wait till Monday, but we’re going to have perfect weather, so we can do it right after the event! Anyone headed back to town with a few minutes to spare would be great! Usually between 3pm and 5pm.
