Rediscover your youth on adult-tricycles supplied by HBL. With a grant from the Department of Transportation Services we have purchased eight recumbent tricycles for use in this program. Recumbent tricycles are known for their unique riding position that offer greater stability and comfort to riders of all levels. Even if you haven’t been on a bike since your childhood, or don’t know how to ride a bike, the recumbent trike offers a (very comfortable) alternative to traditional upright bicycles. They’re great for people with bad backs or poor balance! If you’re used to riding a bicycle this is a fun alternative to see the island from a more laid-back and cruiser-perspective. We always ride the pace of the slowest rider, so you never have to worry about getting left behind! You will be with a friendly, patient, and knowledgeable Ride Leader the whole time.

New Program Information! (As of 9/2019)
5 Ride Reservation Cap
In an effort to reach more people through this grant-funded program and have more people experience these unique trikes, starting on September 1st 2018, participants will be able to attend FIVE (5) scheduled Senior Rides. This is for either the Pearl City ones or Honolulu ones that are scheduled on HBL’s site. (Does not include other events we do with the trikes at libraries, parks, expos, partnerships with housing centers, other groups, etc.). You will be notified before you reach your 5th ride.
For those that have ridden with us before, your Ride Count will be wiped clean on July 1, 2020!
Bonus Referral Ride Program
Reached your maximum of 5 rides with the trikes but want to trike more? Refer a friend (or two or more!) to the program and gain two (2) BONUS “referral” rides for yourself! When your friend signs up, make sure they add your first & last name to the “
Bringing Your Own Ride?
Participants are able to join our scheduled Senior Rides by bringing their own bicycle/tricycle. You will still need to register, but your rides with your own bike/trike do not count towards the 5 Ride Cap. Requirements: Your bicycle/tricycle needs to be in WORKING condition, you must bring and wear a helmet for the ride, and you should know how to fix your own flat (and have the tools to do so). Don’t know what tools to bring or how to fix a flat? Attend one of our Basic Bike Maintenance workshops to learn all of that! Those bringing their own bike/trike should have good bike control and be able to ride at a slow pace with a group – we strongly recommend attending a Bicycling Basics workshop before!

1. Senior ” Beginner ” Ride
This two-hour morning workshop will provide recumbent tricycles (and all the bells and whistles) to seniors ages 50 and up, free of charge. The instructor will go over the all the basics of the trike – trike handling, fit, gear shifting, braking, and how to ride efficiently. It will finish with a short ride on the Pearl Harbor Bike Path or Ala Moana Beach Park (you don’t have to worry about cars on the bike paths!). No prior bicycling experience is needed—this workshop is aimed at kūpuna who have not ridden a bike in a long time or for those who just want to enjoy the lovely Hawaiʻi sunshine while getting some exercise in! The Beginner is Ride open to those new to trike-ing.
2. Senior ” Intermediate ” Ride
This two-hour morning workshop is a good follow-up to the Senior Beginner Ride. HBL will provide recumbent tricycles (and all the bells and whistles) to seniors ages 50 and up, free of charge. The workshop will include everything covered in the Senior Beginner Rides but the Intermediate Rides are open for any senior who has come to the Beginner Ride – trike reservations are first come, first served.
3. Senior “Advanced” Ride
This 2-hour workshop is for seniors (age 50 and up) wanting to complete the full 10 miles on the Pearl Harbor Bike Path and get a good workout in on the trikes provided by HBL. The Advanced Ride is designed for those who are able to keep a moderate pace and ride the full distance at the speed of the group (not for first-time trikers). If you haven’t tried the trikes before or don’t think you might be able to keep a quicker pace, we suggest you choose the Beginner or Intermediate Ride.
Please Note:
All Senior Ride trike reservations are on a first come, first served basis (in order of participant sign up). There are only limited tricycles available (8 at the Pearl City location & 5 at the Ala Moana location), so sign up to reserve your trike now!
New for 2020!
What if you are still a bit younger and not quite Senior status (50+)?
All Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen (those under 50) – feel free to bring your own bike and ride with this slower paced group for balance control and kūpuna camaraderie! Simply register and indicate that you will bring your own bike. If you have a special circumstance where a younger rider may need to provide you with transportation to the meet up location but they don’t own a bike, simply let me know in the additional comment section of the registration and I will make special arrangements for them.
Aloha Senior Trike Rider,
It is with sincere regret that I must inform you that, as of St. Patrick’s Day March 17th, 2020, all Senior Trike Rides have been suspended due to precautionary and safety procedures encouraged at this current time. Please continue to be as hygienically courteous and friendly with all of those around you and to practice situational awareness, practical thinking ability and logic to help be part of the solution. We encourage you to follow recommended tips/best practices from all major government agencies and medical experts and to continue your exercise regimen on your own, as well as to maintain proper hydration and rest to keep yourself healthy and your immune system strong. We will hope for the best and will resume rides as usual, as soon as we receive an all clear, as we are wishing for one to happen as soon as possible!
Team HBL
Happy New Year! Please sign up only for the rides you will absolutely be able to attend and not cancel 24 hours before the workshop leaving a gap in the ride schedule. Thank you for your understanding and courtesy to your fellow riders!)
Again for maximum clarity:
Beginner– Slow ride take it easy- for first timers and those starting to exercise or get back into it. 2-3 miles round, very leisure ride.
Intermediate-Let’s Ride- Similar to introductory with more distance added to the ride which adds more hills, 6-10 miles round trip depending on the group, more challenging than beginner.
Advanced– Ride the Lightning-You will need to do at least 2 of the above rides and ride leader will need to approve you registration ready for this ride, 9-10 miles round trip, Challenging!

Cancellation / No-Show Fee
For cancellations/no-shows with less than 24 hours notice there will be a $5.00 cancellation/no-show fee for costs incurred. If you cannot attend your scheduled workshop, please contact HBL’s Adult Education Manager at Malia@HBL.org or text/call (808) 223-0421 as soon as possible. Because our Senior Rides have limited trikes, no-shows and late cancellations deprive someone else from the opportunity to participate. As a small nonprofit trying to change the world one person at a time, we appreciate your understanding!
