Downtown and Chinatown
Bikeways and Safer Walking Streets!
At the public meeting 3/15/17, the City completed planning for the Downtown/Chinatown Complete Streets Implementation project. The City is going to be repaving most of the streets in Downtown and Chinatown in 2018-2019 and in accordance with our Complete Streets law they went through the process of looking at various improvements to make the streets safer for walking and bicycling.
At the 3/15/17, the City Department of Transportation Services announced that they will be moving forward with some major positive changes. These bicycle and pedestrian improvements include:
- a 2-way protected bike lane on Bishop St
- 1-way bike lane on Richards St, 1-way bike lane on Bethel
- bike lanes on a section of Nuuanu Ave
- road diet and bike lanes on Queen St
- protected intersection at Bishop and Queen
- curb extension safety enhancements at 21 pedestrian crossings
The City conducted a lot of community outreach and heard from the public that they want a bicycle and pedestrian-friendly Downtown and Chinatown. Thank you to everyone that got involved and spoke up!
Is more support needed, YES more support is always needed! While the planned changes are moving forward, as the project moves closer to construction in 2018 or 2019 more support will be needed! Please join our Bike Advocacy Team to make sure you get the latest notices on how to be involved!
