Let’s Make Date Street Safe for All!
*Final Neighborhood Board Project Presentations in March*
*Updated 2/22/18. Important updates!* The Date St bikeway and Complete Streets project had a series of public meetings in September 2017. The project is nearing reality! The City will be giving a final project update to the 2 area Neighborhood Boards, while these are just project updates we should have supporters present!
The City is considering Complete Streets improvements to a section of Date Street to make the street safer for walking and biking. In accordance with our Complete Streets law, the City is looking at this as part of the repaving of the street between Kapiolani Blvd and the Manoa/Palolo Stream. Under considering is “Right Sizing” this section of Date Street – converting it from 2 lanes in each direction to 1 lane in each direction, a center left turn lane, and bike lanes. The change would reduce speeding, make pedestrian crossings much safer, and improve safety for everyone using the street (national studies show “right sizings” reduce crashes and injuries by a whooping 29-47%). From a bike perspective, it would make the street dramatically safer with bike lanes starting from the end of the bike path at the bridge and extending to Kapiolani Blvd. It would also be a crucial first phase for the next step to extend the bike lanes to University Ave and on to Isenberg St – this extension is already funded, as well as bike lanes on Isenberg St which would complete the connection to King St. This is a big opportunity to build our safe and connected bikeway network and make the street safer for all users.
The project will had its first public meetings in September 2017. This March, it will have its final two meetings. The project is in 2 Neighborhood Boards and will be presented to both. We need your support at them.
Come out to support at final project updates!
- McCully/Moiliili Neighborhood Board – March 1st Thursday 6:30pm @ Washington Middle School (1663 King St)
- Kapahulu/Diamond Head Neighborhood Board – March 8th Thursday 6:30pm @ Ala Wai Club House (404 Kapahulu Ave)
In just the last 5 years on this short 1/3-mile section of Date St, there have been 6 serious bicycle injuries and 2 pedestrian injuries (all requiring EMS response). This is unacceptable. Those that walk and bike on Date Street deserve a safer street. Right Sizing Date Street will create a dramatically safer street for everyone – walking, biking, and driving! Come out to support for final project updates to make sure this moves forward. If you live the neighborhood or travel on Date St, please come out March 1 and March 8. Email Daniel, our Advocacy Director, at firstname.lastname@example.org to get involved.
The Date St multi-use path creates a safe place for biking and walking. It ends at the Manoa/Palolo Stream bridge.
West/ewa of the bridge bicyclists have to share the busy road, but many opt to share the narrow and sometimes no-existent sidewalks with pedestrians.
Date St is split between two neighborhood boards – Kapahulu/Diamond Head/St. Louis and McCully/Moiliili. Many of you came out to support this project on September 7th before the McCully/Moiliili – the strong support present at the meeting made clear to the board members that many in the community want this important change. Now, we need advocates to come out to final two meetings.
