Oʻahu has seen some great improvements toward becoming more bicycle-friendly, with the installation of our first protected bike lane and many miles of bike lanes and sharrows added. But does this bring the bikers out? Find out for yourself by helping out with our annual Oʻahu Bike Count this year!
The Oʻahu Bike Count is a three-day event that takes place the third week of September and documents the number of bicycles traveling through some of the important cycling intersection on Oʻahu. We have taken the methodology from the National Bicycle & Pedestrian Documentation Project and applied it to our place we call paradise to see where cycling infrastructure is needed. If there are already bike lanes in place the information gathered is also highly useful to see if people are actually using that existing infrastructure.
We are excited to learn more about cycling trends in Hawaiʻi and what affects them, but we need your help. The Oʻahu Bike Count relies on awesome people to help count at different intersections around the island on September 13, 14, and 15. For each of the three days there is a morning shift from 7-9am and an evening shift from 4-6pm in various locations ranging from Downtown toʻEwa, UH Mānoa to Kalihi and beyond. All you need to do is count bikes!
Data collected from this year’s count will be released at the following Bike Count Results Party, and all those that volunteer for the count will receive an invitation to the party and special guess pass.
