Meet at Waimanalo District Park at 8:30 am. We’ll clean up trash from the back roads until 11:00, and then have lunch. Be sure to wear shoes and please bring gloves (also a hat, sunscreen, & water bottle). Many hands make light work! If you’re already committed, bring a friend!

Bike & transit – natural partners

The full 20-mile Honolulu rail system is scheduled to open in 2019, linking East Kapolei to Ala Moana Center. The rail will not only bring about a new means of getting around, but will reshape our communities away from the car-centric and towards the people-centric. In order to facilitate this transformation, Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) plans for neighborhoods surrounding the system’s 21 stations have been created and will shape development in these areas. The City is also focusing on implementing improvements for people who bike in these TOD neighborhoods with a focus on protected bike lanes.

In Vancouver transit, TOD, and a bikeway network is getting big results
In Vancouver BC transit, TOD, and a bikeway network are getting big results

Bicycling will play a big role in transforming mobility on Oahu. Bicycling, the rail, and TOD will work in tandem to make get more people on the rail and on bikes. Every rail trip will be multi-modal, many will walk half or even more than a mile to get to stations, but bikes will allow those that live further away to use the system. Compact TOD communities will be well-suited for bicycling. This is a recipe that has been used by forward thinking cities around the globe. Vancouver has implemented it particularly effectively and percentage of trips made by walking, bicycling, and transit recently passed 50%.

It’s our time on Oahu now to get the rail system, TOD, and bikes working together. If we do it right, the result will be more people bicycling, more people taking transit, more transportation choices for less money spent, healthier lives, and more liveable communities.

Be part of the conversation at the 9/10/15 talk hosted by HBL with speakers Mark Garrity – City Department of Transportation Service Deputy Director, Harrison Rue – City TOD Administrator, Ryan Tam – HART Planning Manager, John White – Pacific Resource Partnership Executive Director for a conversation moderated by Daniel Alexander – HBL Advocacy Director. Read speaker bios here.

RSVP online or via Facebook.

HBL is working to advocate for bicycle infrastructure to the rail stations, bike parking at the stations, bikes on the rail, and bikes as a central part of TOD. Get involved in this work to make our voice stronger. Join our Bike Advocacy Team.

HBL Volunteers Help Clean the Pearl Harbor Bike Path

Eight Volunteers joined HBL Staff Person Taylor Ritenberg for the 2014 Pearl Harbor Bike Path Annual Clean Up.

Working with Adopt a Stream, the Navy, Council Member Harimoto, as well as over one hundred community volunteers; HBL Volunteers worked to clean up the path of any debris, glass, weeds, carpets, and other dumped materials.

The Pearl Harbor Bike Path is now in tip-top condition. Go for a ride this weekend – the weather is beautiful and the path is clean and debris-free once more.

Keep an eye out for the beautification of the Pearl Harbor Bike Path. Wonderful things are being planned for this great community asset.

BikeEd Hawaii Makes Bicycling Safely Fun

BikeEd ProgramThe Hawaii Bicycling League and the City and County of Honolulu have partnered to bring BikeEd Hawaii to fourth graders on Oahu. This comprehensive bicycle safety program teaches our keiki how to ride safely in our communities. Through the efforts of many, the BikeEd(sm) Hawaii program has provided the knowledge and basic skills to begin to navigate school neighborhoods safely as bicyclists and pedestrians. Parents are encouraged to bike and walk with your child to develop these skills.

What is BikeEd Hawaii?

  • A fun bike safety program by the Hawaii Bicycling League to teach all 4th graders in participating schools
  • 4 or 5 days instruction of 45-60 minutes per class
  • Two BikeEd Hawaii Instructors per class(certified in Traffic Skills 101 by the League of American Bicyclists)
  • On-campus/park instruction, followed by on-road instruction
  • Beginner riders are able to participate and will receive instruction, time permitting
  • Parent volunteers are welcome!

What Will Students Learn?

  • Proper use of helmet, safety vest/bright clothes
  • The “6-Point Bicycle Safety Check” (Air, Brakes, Chain, Handlebar, Pedals, Seat)
  • Ride on the RIGHT side of the road and stay on CHECKPOINT (2-3 ft. from the curb or parked vehicle)
  • Correct procedures at stop signs, inter-sections, and U-turns
  • Safe driveway exit
  • Bicycling safely is fun!

Activities for Parents:

  • Volunteer in your child’s BikeEd Hawaii classes (contact teacher)
  • Buy your child a bicycle from a local bike shop (local bicycling resource experts!)
  • Ride with your child for at least 30 hours outside of class in the next 6 months
  • Volunteer to organize other bike rides with student’s school
  • Go to www.hbl.org/content/school-photos to check out your child’s BikeEd school photos and to learn more about HBL
  • Develop “Safe Routes to School” for your child and school
  • Organize Bike Parades with HBL

I just want to take a moment to thank your organization for teaching my son, Aidan, to ride a bike!! I have tried to for years, but because he is big for his age, I couldn’t find training wheels that would support him. He is so excited about riding a bike that we are going to be getting him a bike for Christmas. I can’t wait to ride as a family around our subdivision. Please thank the instructors that made this happen.” – Chrysti
