Protected Bike Lanes: Cycling Savvy Series Video #1

Types of Bike Infrastructure in Hawai‘i and How to Use It

Protected Bike Lanes

What are protected bike lanes? Protected bike lanes are next-generation bikeways being built across the US. Protected bike lanes (also known as “cycletracks”) are physically separated from motor traffic and distinct from the sidewalk. They use physical barriers – like curbs, plastic bollards, or planters – to separate the cycle track from both cars and sidewalks. They combine the experience of a separated bike path with the on-street infrastructure of a conventional bike lane.

Why should we have more protected bike lanes?

Imagine riding in a wide bike lane that is separated from cars by a physical barrier. Feel safer? That’s because it is! Feel better than riding on the road or in an unprotected bike lane? If you said Yes, then a whole lot of others agree with you!

  • Protected bike lanes are safer.
  • Protected bike lanes eliminate risk of injury from overtaking vehicles.
  • Protected bike lanes reduce risk of “dooring.”
  • Protected bike lanes get people off the sidewalk (where they are at increased risk of injury to themselves and pedestrians).
  • For all these reasons, people of all levels and ages love protected bike lanes! Which means they get more people out riding, more often!

While they’ve been used in Europe for a long time, in recent years protected bike lanes are taking off in the US with over 70 cities already having at least one in place (as of August 2015). Check out the Green Lane Project’s website for a comprehensive list of protected bike lanes in the US.

Protected Bike Lane (“PBL”) – Safe Biking Tips:

  • While the lanes protect cyclists from being struck by motorists from behind, it is part of the roadway and you should operate with similar caution as riding on the road.
  • Watch for vehicles crossing at driveways and intersections – always be aware! Slow down & look around for cars & people BEFORE entering the green paint.
  • Follow all traffic laws and signals. There are traffic signals facing cyclists both ways that riders must adhere to (please, no running red lights!).
  • Yield to pedestrians.
  • Be aware of pedestrians crossing from the parking lane on the outside of the protected bike lane to the sidewalk.
  • Don’t ride in the “buffer zone” – this is the dreaded “door zone.” The buffer zone is 3-foot area marked by crosshatched paint and designed to provide space for people parking to open their door and get in/out of their car.
  • Ride to the right unless passing someone else in the “PBL”. It’s a great courtesy to let them know you’re passing ahead of time with your voice or bell.
  • Ride with aloha & care. This is NOT made to be a “bike super-freeway” where you should ride fast & not look around. It’s actually for people that don’t want to ride fast or in the lanes of traffic.

Rules for Safe Driving:

  • When crossing the protected bike lanes, yield the right of way. Crossing a protected bike lane is like crossing a travel lane – you must yield the right of way.
  • Before making a turn, you must signal your intentions (the law states at least 100 ft in advance).
  • When crossing a protected bike lane look both ways (for people on the sidewalk/crosswalk and bike riders in the PBL). Be aware that many cyclists move quite fast.
  • When pulling out of or into a driveway, do not stop in a protected bike lane.
  • When parking next to a protected bike lane, look before opening your door. Be cautious when walking across a protected bike lane from adjacent street parking. Look both ways before crossing.
  • Mopeds are not permitted in protected bike lane.
  • Drive always with aloha and care!

Kalākaua Avenue Open Street Sundays!

7/23/20 UPDATE: CANCELLED DUE TO HURRICANE July 26 Kalākaua Open Street Sunday

  • Where to find car parking
  • How to volunteer!

The City and County of Honolulu along with the Hawaii Bicycling League, announced the launch of Kalākaua Open Street Sundays. Now, for SEVEN consecutive Sundays, beginning June 14 thru July 26, bicyclists, joggers, and walkers will be able to travel down Kalākaua Avenue in Waikīkī to enjoy outdoor exercise while promoting one of the simplest ways to lower our environmental footprint with other members of our island ‘ohana.

“We’ve all noticed more people out walking, jogging, and biking as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mayor Kirk Caldwell. “Opening Kalākaua Avenue to everyone so they have a place to exercise while allowing our local families the opportunity to enjoy a less-crowded Waikīkī during this time is a win-win for everyone. We hope people will dine in Waikīkī’s excellent restaurants and shop in its stores, uncrowded by tourists, helping our local economy while staying safe and healthy.”

This is Honolulu’s version of an Open Street Initiative, similar to “Slow” or “Open” streets in other cities, adapted to the realities of the Covid-19 pandemic. These streets, usually bumper to bumper with motor vehicles, are being opened for more people-focused activities such as biking, jogging, or walking. With the decrease in vehicular traffic on the roadways and minimal tourism, Kalākaua Open Street Sundays will also help reconnect kamaʻāina and merchants along Kalākaua Avenue.

Kalākaua Open Street Sundays are scheduled for June 14, 21, 28, July 5, 12, 19, and 26. The events will be held on Kalākaua Avenue between Seaside Avenue and Kapahulu Avenue. The route will be closed to all vehicular traffic from 6 a.m. to noon. Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible and use alternate routes. Please allow extra travel time and abide by posted traffic signs. Special Duty Honolulu Police Department Officers will be posted to assist with traffic control.

Participants of all ages and abilities are welcome, including families with small children and infrequent bicyclists, with a goal for everyone to enjoy safe, traffic-free mornings. However, we would like to remind everyone that physical distancing is still required between each family and face coverings should be worn to the extent possible. We also encourage participants to keep on the move. Congregating will be prohibited. Of course, people are allowed to dine in restaurants and visit our public beaches along the route, as long as they follow the Restore Honolulu guidelines.

Hawaii Bicycling League will be providing free Bike Valet so you can have peace of mind leaving your bike secured with us. No lock needed!

FREE Bike Valet Details:

Bike Valet will be open from 8:00AM till 1:00PM, and is brought to you by the City & County of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services, and sponsored in part by Elite Parking Services.

Strange Times Cycling Challenge!

We want to keep things fun, even while we’re stuck at home. Biking seems to be a source of comfort to us, and we hope that you think so too. We thought up a little challenge for you all to do during these “strange times”.

Announcing… the Strange Times Cycling Challenge!

CHALLENGE GUIDELINES:

– Each week of April HBL will release eight (8) challenge tasks. You can complete all of them, or choose a minimum of five (5) to do per week.

The names of those that have successfully completed the 20 (or more) tasks over the 4 weeks will be acknowledged publicly via HBL’s social media (Facebook and Instagram). The drawing for the one (1) winner will be selected at random on May 1st and announced in the following days. The winner will be contacted via email (we will ask for your email in Week 4).
– Participants must complete each of the week’s challenges in April (at least 5 tasks out of 8) to be entered in the winning drawing.

Find out more about our other “Strange Times” Strava Art Competition here (going on till the end of April).

Strava Art Competition

While we’re cooped up inside we devised a fun little competition. It involves bicycles (of course!), a bit of some strategic thinking, and your creativity.

Announcing, the “Strange Times” Strava Art Competition!

The competition starts on April 1st, 2020 and is open to all current HBL members (woohoo, member perks!).

What it is: Use Strava or MapMyRide (on your smart phone or cycle computer) to show us your biking+art skills.

You can submit multiple “art” pieces, but they have to be made by you riding a bicycle (any kind of bicycle).

Once you’re done creating your “art” and uploading your ride, take a screenshot of your art-by-bike submission.

Email your JPEG, PNG, or PDF submissions to Malia@HBL.org.

We’ll be accepting submissions until April 30th (11:59pm HST), 2020. On May 1st HBL will post the gathered submissions up on HBL’s Facebook page for people to vote on what they think is the best one. Votes will be counted as the number of “likes” received. Voting will be open for one week. You are allowed to vote on your own creation, and people can vote for multiple entries – but only one can be selected as the winner of HBL’s Strange Times Strava Art Competition! The winner will be officially announced at the end of the voting period and the winning “cyclartist” will be contacted via email.

Malia’s trial example of Strava Art by bike

  • Do NOT participate in this or any outdoor outings if you are feeling sick, have a fever, or might have been in close contact with someone sick.
  • When biking you MUST practice social distancing (at least 6 ft away from others).
  • No cheating! Your submission must be done by you (unless otherwise noted), and by bicycle (this includes pedal-assist electric bikes, Biki bikes, mountain bikes, etc.).
  • Ride responsibly. Obey all rules of the road, signal your intentions, if riding at night have proper lights, and always scan ahead.
  • Do NOT stop in the middle of the road for your art. Do NOT ride your bike against the flow of traffic (unless traffic markings indicate you can). All in all: don’t ride like an idiot!
  • If you are found breaking the law or not respecting the aforementioned rules, you will be eliminated from the competition.
  • Please keep your artwork G-rated. (Think about the children!)
