Aloha Hawaii Bicycling League Ohana!

We’re looking for new or gently used sneaker donations to HBL for the BikeEd Program!

A Little About the BikeEd Program…

The BikeEd Program started in 1989 and our instructors have taught over a hundred thousand fourth graders on Oahu how to ride bicycles safely! The program is normally one week long and runs from Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:00am to 2:00pm. Instruction follows a set curriculum and includes a safety presentation, on-bicycle instruction on-campus, and two days of on-road instruction. The course goes over basic bicycle safety, how to perform a six-point bicycle safety check, bicycle control, how to properly leave a driveway, and how to make right, left, and U turns. Bicycles, helmets, and safety vests are provided.

For safety purposes, students are required to wear sneakers while cycling. Unfortunately, over the years, we have found that many students across Oahu don’t own shoes due to lack of family resources.

We’re collecting kicks to lend to keiki during the BikeEd week so they don’t miss out on the FUN and EDUCATIONAL week!

The Leeward Bikeway

The Leeward Bikeway project has been in the works for almost 40 years! This year, with generous member donations, HBL decided it has been too long! We have been working hard to get the word out, policy implemented and the multi-use path built! Around 23 miles long, the Leeward Bikeway will be the longest bike path on Oahu. Join us on this ride to see the (not yet paved) western-most portion of the route, to tour the Kahumana Organic Farm, and enjoyed lunch at the Kahumana Organic Cafe! Learn more about the Leeward Bikeway at www.HBL.org/LeewardBikeway

Kahumana Organic Farm & Cafe

Kahumana Organic Farm believes that caring for the most vulnerable members of our society determines our mark as a people and a nation. The farms mission is to co-create a healthy, inclusive and productive farm-based community with homeless families, people with disabilities and youth through the practices of: mindfulness (Maka’ala), empathy (Aloha), and working together (Lokahi).

More about Kalaeloa Heritage Park…

“The Kalaeloa Heritage and Legacy Foundation (KHLF), a 501 (c) 3 Native Hawaiian organization formed by members of ‘Ahahui Siwila Hawaii O Kapolei (ASHOK) and dedicated residents of the Honouliuli ahupua‘a (land district) for the purpose of preserving and protecting Native Hawaiian Cultural and historical sites of Kalaeloa by creating a heritage park. Since 1998 ASHOK has worked with the Navy, Barbers Point Redevelopment Commission, and then with Hawaii Community Development Authority (HCDA) to preserve these sites and minimize damages. In December of 2010 members of ASHOK’s Kalaeloa committee came to the realization that these sites needed the exclusive dedication of an organization to preserve these sites and create a heritage park. The committee and ASHOK stepped aside so such an organization could be created. A conceptual plan for the park was drafted in 2014 and the foundation was given a 40 year lease to the park property in December of 2015. KHLF’s mission for the Heritage Park is the stewardship and preservation of these Native Hawaiian cultural sites and the cultural landscape of Kalaeloa, to educate the community on cultural traditions and practices, advocate cultural awareness, implement and maintain an authentic Hawaiian presence in the Kalaeloa area.” Learn more about Kalaeloa Heritage Park at www.khlfoundation.org/about
