In July 2011, over 100 cyclist rode out in the first Zachary Manago’s Ride in Paradise. Zach’s family, classmates and HBL rode over two-days across the island, stopping in numerous communities to voice the need for safer roads for cyclists and pedestrians.
In 2021, we will celebrate the 10th anniversary – more than ever we need your support. The goal is simple – bring cyclists together to emphasize the need for safer streets and sharing Hawaii’s roads.
HBL’s community-based event raises awareness and funds for safety education among drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. Named to celebrate the life and memorialize the tragic death of Zachary Manago, we are honored his legacy continues.
On December 17, 2010 one of Hawaii’s own, Zachary Manago, was killed by a hit and run driver on Kamehameha Highway near Wahiawa while riding his bicycle. Zach was only 18 years old. He was a pitching ace on the Moanalua High School baseball team and was due to play for Hawaii Pacific University in the Spring. When Zach started college in the Fall, he started riding his bike to school because of the lack of and cost for parking downtown. Before his passing he wrote and advocated for the the need for safer roads and was active in the local cycling community.
