Announcing the Return of HBL’s Senior Cycling Program!

March 23, 2021

What a year this has been. While the pandemic had taken away our ability to hold the senior rides in March of last year and forced our organization to put our in-person fundraising events on hold indefinitely, we are immensely thrilled to announce the return of Hawaii Bicycling League’s Senior Cycling program.

April 10, 2021 (SAT.)

8:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Ready to Ride?

To kick things back into gear (pardon our cycling pun), HBL will be hosting a celebratory and exploratory “Try Out Our Trikes” Open House Event on Saturday, April 10th from 8am till 11am at Neal Blaisdell Park with trike test ride sessions starting off every 45-minutes.

This free, outdoor event is open to anyone that is curious about riding an adult trike on the Pearl Harbor Bike Path provided through HBL’s Senior Cycling program, which is FREE to kĹŤpuna 50 years of age and better! Scroll down to register.

Saturday, April 10th
8:00 AM – 11:00 AM

Location: Neal Blaisdell Park (98-319 Kamehameha Hwy, ‘Aiea, HI 96701)  (See map)

  • 10:15 – 11:00am – Session #4 – FULL. Incoming registrants will be put on a ride waitlist as of 3/23/21.

We’ll have trike try-out sessions starting every 45-minutes for you & your friends to learn about and take a short test ride on HBL’s recumbent three-wheelers, made for adults and perfect for those with bad backs or poor balance!

Register BELOW to reserve yourself a trike!

Each session will include our Ride Instructors going over the entire run-down of how to use the trike, trike fitting to each individual, and then a brief Instructor-led test ride for you to see how these unique (and extremely comfortable!) trikes make cycling a breeze.

We have only eight (8) trikes available per session, so we ask for you to register for only ONE (1) Session time and plan to arrive promptly.

SORRY, REGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT IS NOW CLOSED.

More about our Senior Cycling Program:

What is HBL’s Senior Cycling Program?
Recumbent adult-trikes are provided free of charge for kūpuna (age 50 and up) to get a leisurely spin outdoors in an instructor-led group ride boosting the immune system, strengthening muscle, and (re)introducing cycling as a fun, healthy, and environmentally-green way to exercise & explore our beautiful island ‘āina.

Senior Rides are put on by the Hawaii Bicycling League , a local nonprofit that has been fighting for safer streets and more people bicycling since 1975. The HBL’s Ride Instructors are League Cycling Instructors, certified nationally, and are trained, professional, patient, and always friendly.

Find out more information & sign up to reserve YOUR trike in a HBL Senior Ride at: HBL.org/Seniors.

HIP HOP BIKI STOP

May 10 – 16, 2021

Hip Hop Biki Stop is the way to join in HBL’s Mele of Bicycling by riding a Biki!  Simply using Biki for your short hops around town could make you a winner!  The Hawaii Bicycling League is awarding a hip Mele of Bicycling trophy to the person who makes the most trips on a Biki over a 7-day period. Biki will be counting up your trips and the Biki Member with the most trips wins.  You don’t need to do a thing (well, except biki, of course).

Between May 10-16, hop on a Biki at any one of 135 Biki Stops and take a spin.  You’ll automatically be part of Hawaii Bicycling League’s Mele of Bicycling, a month-long celebration of the rhythm of cycling April 30-May 23. Biki users are very important members of Honolulu’s biking community evidenced by the symphony of bright blue bikes moving people happily through town.  If we aren’t handing you a trophy at our May 22 Awards Show, we hope to see you at other fun events throughout the month!

  •

To be eligible for HBL’s Hip Hop Biki Stop trophy, just be:

• A Hawai‘i Resident

• Age 16 or over

• Have an active Biki membership (either a Free Spirit, Commuter, or Voyager Plan)

Other details:

• Rides must be at least 3 minutes in duration to count.

• Trip count will be between May 10 12:01am and May 16 11:59pm.

• No registration is required. Number of trips will be automatically tallied by the Biki system.

• Biki will provide the winner’s name and contact information, along with the winning number of trips taken, to Hawaii Bicycling League for winner award and recognition.

FASTEST FLAT FIXER CONTEST & CHAMPIONSHIP

Qualifier Event: May 15, 2021

Championship: May 22, 2021

Hawaii Bicycling League is putting together a head to head showdown to find out who will win the coveted title of the Fastest Flat Fixer on O‘ahu.

This will be an action-packed, fast-moving, tube-removing, tire-inflating head to head showdown. Competitors from all across the island will show off their fastest flat fixing skills wielding tire levers and pumps in this exciting qualifier event.

Competitors can choose from two divisions – the “Featherweight” Division, which is defined as tires with 80 PSI and above (typically categorized as skinny/road bike tires) or the “Welterweight” Division, which would be tires 35-80 PSI (typical mountain/hybrid tires). The top three competitors from each division, will get a chance to battle for the ultimate crown at the FASTEST FLAT FIXER CHAMPIONSHIP on May 22nd at the Mele Metric Awards Show. Scroll down to register for the Contest!

If you think you're pretty handy wielding a set of tire levers and a pump, we want you to be here.

Don’t want to throwdown but want to get some of the action? You’re encouraged you to come out and bring a friend to be a part of the excitement & participate as a spectator. We can all watch and marvel at the mechanics and everyday commuters as they race against each other and the clock, tire levers & tubes in hand.

Feeling inspired? (We certainly are!) We invite you to get in on the flat fixing action (of course at a more fun and laid-back pace) and attend a complimentary Fix-a-Flat workshop where adults can come to learn how they can perform a smooth and painless flat fixing on their own bike from our friendly & knowledgeable League Cycling Instructors. No competition here! Just learning all the important insider tricks for an effortless wheel change – zero prior mechanical experience needed. The workshop is free of charge and will be offered from 1:00 to 3:00pm on-site, right before the contest.
