October Advocacy Happenings – Zach Manago bike lane naming, Waipahu bikeways, and Neighborhood Action

Read on to hear about some big things happening and how you can get involved to make a difference. We’re working to name the Ala Napunani St bike lanes in memory of Zachary Manago and need your supporting testimony. October 26 the City will presenting a proposal for new bike lanes in Waipahu. And our Neighborhood Advocacy Meetings are going strong and moving to Windward neighborhoods in November.

Ala Napunani St bike lane naming in memory of Zachary Manago 10/25

Many of you know the story of Zachary Manago. Zach was a promising HPU student, baseball player, and avid cyclist who was killed in December 2010 while on a ride with friends around Oahu. Every year, HBL works with the Manago family on the Zachary Manago’s Ride in Paradise to celebrate Zach and his vision for a Hawaii where everyone feels safe bicycling. Beyond the annual ride, Zach’s vision permeates our advocacy work for more bike lanes and safer streets for all.

Please join HBL and the Manago family in supporting Bill 77 and Resolution 17-252 to name the Ala Napunani St bike lanes in memory of Zach.

Zach grew up on Ala Napunani St and it’s awesome to see his vision for safer streets become reality on the street. Naming the bike lanes in memory of Zach would honor him and help perpetuate his vision for a bicycle friendly Hawaii.

Testimony Strongly Supporting Bill 77

Aloha Council Chair Menor and esteemed members of Honolulu City Council,

Hawaii Bicycling League strongly supports Bill 77 that will name the Ala Napunani Street bike lanes in memory of Zachary Manago.

Zachary Manago, a promising HPU student, baseball player, and avid cyclist was killed in December 2010 while on a ride with friends around Oahu. He was riding on the road shoulder with proper equipment and lights when struck by a hit and run driver. Zach was passionate about safer bicycling facilities and wanted to make Hawaii safe so more people could bike.

Hawaii Bicycling League has been working with the Manago family since 2011 to hold the annual Zachary Manago’s Ride in Paradise to honor Zach’s memory and his vision for Hawaii where everyone can feel safe bicycling. Beyond the annual ride, Zach’s vision is a part of all our advocacy and work to get more bike lanes and safer streets for all.

Zach lived on Ala Napunani Street, a street that has now been transformed with bike lanes into a safer street for biking and everyone. We request your support in passing Bill 77 to name the Ala Napunani Street bike lanes in memory of Zach will to both honor Zach and to perpetuate his vision for a bicycle friendly Hawaii.

Waipahu Bikeway Projects up before Neighborhood Board 10/26

Come out and support Thursday 10/26 7:00pm to the Filipino Community Center to support a bicycle friendly Waipahu! The City is repaving a number of streets in Waipahu and planning bikeway projects on 3 streets. In accordance with the Complete Streets law, they are looking at how to make all streets safer for walking, biking, and driving. They are looking to implement bike lanes on Paiwa Street, WaipahuStreet, and Leoku Street. Combined these new bike lanes will make it much safer to get around by bike in Waipahu and to Waikele.  Read more about the projects and how to get involved here.

Neighborhood Action Meetings

We’re meeting in every neighborhood. Next up, Kailua 11/6, Ko’olauloa 11/7, and Kahalu’u/Kaneohe 11/15. The objective is to develop a list of neighborhood priorities and making sure these are considered in the bike plan update. Get involved in your neighborhood! Click here for more details.

Support a Bicycle Friendly Waipahu 10/26

The City is considering bike lanes on three streets in Waipahu – Paiwa St, Waipahu St, and Leoku St. Collectively this an opportunity to take a giant step forward in making Waipahu bicycle friendly! Support is needed to make sure these move forward! Come out to the Waipahu Neighborhood Board Thursday Oct. 26 7:00pm.

Complete Streets coming to Waipahu

The City is repaving a number of streets in Waipahu. In accordance with the Complete Streets law, they are looking at how to make all streets safer for walking, biking, and driving. Based on their analysis, the City is proposing bike lanes on Waipahu Street, Paiwa Street, and Leoku Street.

Waipahu St bikeway

The City is proposing bike lanes where there is enough room and sharrows where it’s too narrow. The bike lanes stretch 0.7-miles from Waipahu Depot Rd to August Arhens Elementary. Sharrows will continue west to Kunia Rd and east to the H-1 overpass (where the City jurisdiction ends).

Paiwa St bikeway

The City is proposing a “right sizing” of Paiwa St from Waipahu St mauka to Hina St. The “right sizing” will convert the street from 2 lanes in each direction to 1 lane in each direction, a center left turn, and bike lanes on both sides. See info below on why “right sizings” are so effective at improving safety. These bike lanes will improve an important mauka-makai connection linking Waipahu to Waikele (and the backside of CORP). When rail is operable, the Paiwa St bike lanes connecting with Waipahu St bike lanes will provide a bike connection from mauka areas to the Waipahu rail station near Waipahu Depot Rd and Farrington Hwy.

Leoku St bikeway

Similar to Paiwa St, Leoku St is under consideration for “right sizing”.  The West Loch rail station will be located near the intersection of Leoku St and Farrington Hwy, so bike lanes on Leoku will play an important role in connecting people to the rail when it’s up and running.

Facts on Right Sizings

Right Sizings (aka “road diets”) reconfigure a 4-lane street from two lanes in each direction to one lane in each direction, a center left turn lane, and bike lanes. This treatment has been used on countless streets across the US and on Keolu Dr (Kailua), Kamehameha IV Rd (Kalihi), and Ala Napunani St (Salt Lake) here on Oahu. The safety results have been giant – according to the USDOT Federal Highway Administration right sizings reduce injuries and crashes by 19-47% for all users – bicyclists, pedestrians, and drivers. They do this because they make left turns much safer by providing a left turn lane, they make pedestrians crossing much safer by reducing the crossing distance and exposure, they make cycling much safer by providing bike lanes, and they dramatically improve safety for everyone by reducing speeding.

Come to support these & vision for a bicycle friendly Waipahu!
