Have a Funky/Strange/Unconventional Cycle?
Got any weird wheels? We are looking for eccentric, unique, and/or bizarre bicycles for “Wheel World,” a bicycle-themed Family Sunday at the Honolulu Museum of Art, in Bike Month! We want to showcase one-of-a-kind bikes and highlight your marvelous ride for all to see on May 21st! So if you have a far-out bike that you would like to put on display for the day – unicycle, bamboo bike, tricked out low-rider, penny farthing, etc. – email Malia at Malia@HBL.org.
Your displayed bicycle would not be ridden and would need to be delivered to the Honolulu Museum of art at 900 South Beretania Street by 10m on May 21st. You would be able to pick your bike up on the same day (at the same place) after 3pm.
We are on the search for the wackiest bikes, here’s some ideas:
- Bikes made from unusual things (ex: bamboo, wood, etc.)
- Atypical tandem (ex: quad tandem, recumbent tandem, etc.)
- Cargo+trailer bike
- Tall bike
- Decked out low-rider
- Penny farthing
- Art bike – super decorated bicycle
While bizarre bikes are what we are on the lookout for, unconventional cycles are needed as well! We will have a bike-matching game at the event, so we need all different types of rides to display as well:
- Recumbent bicycle
- Fat tire bike
- Electric bike
- Folding bike
- Classic track bike
- Balance/push bike
Feel free to email Malia at Malia@HBL.org with any questions, or call (808) 735-5756.
Visit us and our trikes at the Senior Fun Walk & Fun Fest on April 7th (Friday) at the Patsy Mink Central O’ahu Regional Park! The free event is from 9am till noon, and is for those 55 years of age and older. You can walk the 0.5 mile course, 1 mile, or 2 mile course (register there for the walk at 8:30am), or come out to test ride our adult recumbent trikes (no sign up required for the trikes)!
The trikes will be available to ride around the park (for free!) for the whole duration of the event (9am-12pm). This is a great chance to try out the trikes from our Senior Cycling program! Bring your friends and family out, and get your trike-ing on!
For questions, call the event organizers (City & County of Honolulu, Department of Parks & Recreation) at 973-7258.
If you would like to volunteer and help make sure everyone has a wonderful, fun, and safe trike-ing experience, please email Malia at Malia@HBL.org or call (808) 735-5756! Mahalo!
Big changes are in the works for Waipahu. As part of the Transit Oriented Development planning, the City is looking at ways to make Waipahu more friendly for walking and bicycling. This includes better connections to the Pearl Harbor Historic Trail and future Leeward Bikeway and creating a network of bikeways through Waipahu.
Please get involved by coming out to the City’s Waipahu Action Plan meeting Tuesday March 21 6:00pm at the Waipahu High School Cafeteria.
Want to be more involved? We’re starting going to have a Waipahu advocacy group meeting in April. Please contact Daniel firstname.lastname@example.org if you’re interested in participating.
Come out Wednesday 3/15 5pm to support a bicycle and pedestrian friendly Downtown/Chinatown! Our opportunity to transform Downtown and Chinatown into the bicycle-friendly heart of Honolulu. We need you involved!
