CycloFemme – Let’s celebrate women riding bicycles!

This Mother’s Day, let’s celebrate not only our mothers and special women in our lives, but all women, and especially those who bike! CycloFemme is a “socially-driven grass-roots celebration of women on bikes.” It takes place internationally on Mother’s Day and is designed to be a day, which “unites riders, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity or bicycle preference to share in the joy of cycling.” Last year, there were 280 CycloFemme rides listed all over the world in places like Springfield, Virginia to Tallinn, Estonia!

This year CycloFemme will be held on May 14th (Sunday) at Kapiʻolani Park, starting at 8am and going till around noon. Bring the whole family! There will be two no-drop rides of different lengths for every level of rider (a beginner ride going around the park and an advanced rideto Hawaii Kai and back). Got a beach cruiser? Bring it! Got a tandem? Bring it! Any bike and all bikes (and trikes) are welcome to ride with us as we take part of the celebration of cycling (and also rejoice at all our awesome local women cyclists)! Bikeadelic will be providing FREE bike rentals to the first 5 ladies who need them for a spin around the park! We’ll have free coffee and breakfast snacks for everyone to enjoy, and special edition 2017 Bike Month shirts too for purchase too! Also, we’ll be getting tatted! We’ve got a bunch of sweet CycloFemme temporary tattoos for people to wear proudly. So come out and let’s RIDE!

Where: Kapiʻolani Park (Picnic area 27/28, across from the Diamond Tennis Center). See map!

When: May 14th (Sunday), 8am-12pm. Rides start at 8:30am.

Who: Anyone and everyone!

Cost: Free!

Bonus: There will be a Bicycling Basics workshop held for free at the park as well, from 9-11am! Sign up at www.HBL.org/workshops.

You can check out the Facebook Event to invite your friends, or just bring ’em along!

Bike Racks for Keiki!

Dole Middle School Bike Rack Area by Administration Walkway
Dole Middle School Bike Rack Area by Administration Walkway

The Hawaii Bicycling League and its BikeEd Program have begun working with Dole Middle School to install a set of bike racks at the campus. With the building of the bikeway along Kamehameha IV Road, riding to school has become much safer than before, but students wishing to ride to school haven’t had any parking for their bikes. With the installation of two bike racks, capable of parking approximately 25 bikes, students can ride to school without worry of losing their sweet rides. Plans are in the works to build the steel racks and lay them on gravel at the entrance to the school by the administration office, much in the same way that bike racks at the University of Hawaii have been set up. The racks will be installed within the next month.

I ♥ King Street Challenge

IHeartKingStreet

Support King St businesses and WIN a round-trip flight to one of the neighbor islands! Read on for details!

A steady flow of afternoon cycling commuters. A grocery run on a trike with a sweet basket. Middle schoolers biking to school in the morning. A family riding on a Saturday afternoon. Some of the many sights that now grace King Street. Images that evoke pleasant feelings of a street and city that provides a safe place for all. Images that evoke a sense of aloha and love.

This Bike Month show a little extra love for King Street by supporting the many businesses that lie upon its two mile length of the protected bike lane.

Here’s the challenge

Ala Moana Park Meeting 4/28 6pm

AlaMoanaOpenHouseFlyer-2016.04.28

The City has been working on a plan to make improvements to Ala Moana Regional Park. They’ll be presenting the draft plan Thursday 4/28 6:00-8:00pm at the McCoy Pavilion (in the park).

Please come out to have your voice in shaping the future of one of Oahu’s most important parks.  Some of the important items that would make the park more bicycle friendly are a bike path connection to Kewalo Basin, a better bike path connection to the Ala Wai Promenade, more bikeway connection to mauka neighborhoods, and more bike racks.
