Zach Manago, a promising HPU student, baseball player, and avid cyclist was killed on December 2010 while on a ride around Oahu. He was riding on the road shoulder with proper equipment and lights when struck by a hit and run driver. Zach was passionate about safer bicycling facilities and wanted to make Hawaii safe so more people could bike.
Awareness: We'll stop at police stations (TBD) and invite elected representatives to discuss local safety concerns/dangerous areas and how to improve them. HBL's instructional courses on safe cycling on Oahu will be featured as part of our Safety Education & Awareness Program.
Donations: Donate on our website. All donations are being used for additional out of pocket expenses to third parties. We've trained League Certified Instructors, created a script for a training video for Roberts Hawaii bus drivers and HPD officers on how to be aware of cyclists and the laws, trained bicyclists and drivers, and developed a PSA with Jake Shimabukuro for share the road message. None of the funds are used to support HBL staff or to pay for basic expenses like rent.
Entry Fees: There is no entry fee. Donations are welcome to HBL's bicycle safety education fund.
More Bicycle Lanes: Read Zach's last major research writing assignment at Hawaii Pacific University. It was written a few weeks before the accident on December 17, 2010.
