To celebrate National Bike Month in May 2014, Manoa Public Library and the Hawaii Bicycling League are partnering to present five free bicycle education classes for ages 16 and up and one group ride for all ages. Led by licensed instructors, the classes and group ride offer something for all skill levels and all ages.
All activities will be held at the Manoa Public Library (2716 Woodlawn Drive, Honolulu, HI 96822). Register online at HBL.org/Workshops for classes. No registration is required for the group ride on May 31, 2014.
Thursday, May 1, 6-7 p.m. - "Everyday Cycling"
Interested in Cycling but don't know where to start? This 1-hour talk will cover why you should bike, how to incorporate cycling into your daily life, and how to make your ride more comfortable. We'll help you figure out what to wear while riding, how to carry things by bike, ride to the beach, and more! Bicycles not required.
Saturday, May 3, 2-4p.m. - "Adult Learn to Ride"
A 2-hour workshop for anyone that doesn't know how to ride a bike. Students meet in a safe learning space and practice bike handling with skilled instructors. Participants will also practice basic bike handling.
Saturday, May 10, 2-4 pm - "Cycling Skills 101"
This 2-hour bicycling course begins with coverage of safe cycling practices in a classroom setting. Topics that will be covered include: your rights as a cyclist, rules of the road, equipment safety checks, lane positioning and more. The class then moves to a large parking area to practice riding drills and finishes with a group ride through the nearby community, combining classroom knowledge and road skills.
Friday, May 16 - "Ride your bike to work day!"
Power up at the Hawaii Bicycling League Energizer station in front of the library while riding your bike to work. Check www.hbl.org for times.
Saturday, May 17, 2-4 pm - "Cycling Skills 201"
This workshop will teach students how to shift, effectively use their brakes, and pedal efficiently. It will also review bike and helmet fit. Participants will practice starting, stopping, turning and signaling. The class will culminate in a group ride. Classes will teach participants how to ride on and off bike paths and roadways. This class is designed to be a follow-up from the Intro to Safe Cycling Talk and Commuter Cycling 101 classes.
Saturday, May 24, 2-4 pm - "Basic Bike Maintenance"
A 2-hour long clinic to teach participants how to fix a flat tire, how to clean and lubricate their chain, and other essential bike maintenance skills.
Saturday, May 31, 8:30-9:30 a.m. - "Manoa Neighborhood Family Ride"
Led by a Certified League instructor, this 2-mile fun ride will be fun for all ages. Bring your own helmet and a bicycle in good working condition. Ages 16 & under must be accompanied by an adult. No registration necessary.
