VISION

The islands of Hawaii are comprised of healthy communities where all people can safely walk, bike, or take public transportation to meet their transportation and recreation needs. 

MISSION

Achieve healthy community design by making walking, public transportation and bicycling fundamental for transportation and recreation.

Achievements and Priorities:

Completed:

  • Passage of Charter Amendment Eight in 2006, requiring the city and county of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services to make Honolulu a pedestrian and bicycle friendly city.
  • Passage of SB 1191/Act 10 which allocates funding to enhance crosswalks at Hawaii’s 50 most dangerous intersections and provide community education.
  • Passage of HB 497/Act 286 which earmarks 2% of federally eligible moneys from the state highway fund for bikeways.
  • Community and school education programs and workshops
  • Issue Papers and resources for the community.
  • Members of the Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization Citizen’s Advisory Committee.

In Progress:

  • Complete Streets Campaign/Legislation
  • Assure construction of the Leeward Bikeway.
  • Capacity building through mobilization of core allies, recruiting volunteers, and creating geographic action teams in key neighborhoods.
  • Increase member and community expertise on transportation and design issues.
  • Participate in planning efforts that address bicycle and pedestrian safety and facilities (Hawaii’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan, Bicycle Master Plan, and Pedestrian Master Plan).
  • Support policies that assure the safety and mobility of pedestrians and bicyclists as part of the transportation system and in community development (“Complete Streets” www.completestreets.org/policies.html

Want to Get Involved? Members provide a passion for healthy community design and assist in a variety of ways including: Provide expertise, help with turn out at events or hearings, organize projects, write letters and make phone calls to policy makers, assist with media, meet with decision makers facilitate learning opportunities, and more!
