THE RIDE OF SILENCE WILL NOT BE QUIET

On the third Wednesday of May, cyclists around the world will take to the roads in memory of those who have been killed in vehicular accidents. During 2001-2006, there were 4,938 bicycle accidents in Hawaii and 36 fatalities, of which 31 were struck by a vehicle (Source: Hawai'i Department of Health, Injury Prevention and Control Program). The ride aims to raise the awareness of bicycle riding and to demonstrate that all users can share the road safely. Riders will wear black arm bands in memory of riders, red if he or she has been hit by a vehicle. Riders are asked to remain silent throughout the ride.
