Honolulu Century RideSeptember 27th 2009
The Honolulu Century Ride is Hawaii's premier bicycling event and the Hawaii Bicycling League’s largest fundraiser, drawing up to 4,000 participants from 8 nations. The Honolulu Century Ride begins and ends at Kapiolani Park, located just west of famous Diamond Head in Honolulu on the island of Oahu. Riders get a great view as they pass the observation point near Diamond Head lighthouse, then glide down a gentle slope through the elegant Kahala district. Riders proceed east along the south shore of Oahu to the Hawaii Kai district, where the 20-mile riders reach a turn around point. Riders who continue on mount “heart break hill” and then cruise to the famous body-surfing beach Sandy Beach. From Sandy Beach, riders continue along the eastern shore of O’ahu, climbing to the scenic viewpoint at Makapu’u. Riders descend the hill at Makapu’u and roll past Sea Life Park into the beautiful village of Waimanalo. Once in Waimanalo, riders take the back roads through the tropical foliage at the base of the famed Ko’olau mountain range, the sharp volcanic ridge that runs the length of the east side of O’ahu. After leaving the rest stop in Waimanalo, riders weave through the back streets of the scenic east-side town of Kailua to another rest stop. They then reach the shores of beautiful Kaneohe Bay, proceeding along the shore until the final turn around point at Swanzy Beach Park, 50 miles from the start in Kapiolani Park.
